Darling Downs Health is urging residents to protect themselves against mosquitos following the recent wet weather.<\/p>\n

Mosquito numbers rise after wet and warm weather, raising the risk of people catching Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus or JEV (Japanese encephalitis virus).<\/p>\n

Dr Alan Lam said the Public Health Unit was working with key stakeholders across the region to assess the risk to the community but personal protection also had a role to play.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMosquito-borne viruses are preventable through vaccination and avoidance of bites,\u201d Dr Lam said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe typically see an increase in reported mosquito-borne virus cases on the Darling Downs from December until around April or May each year.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t be complacent and to protect yourself against mosquito bites by taking measures such as applying insect repellent – preferably one that contains DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus – and wearing loose and light-coloured clothing and covered footwear when outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n
