Darling Downs Health has created a new Midwife Guide position for women to discuss any questions they have about maternity care.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand that some women in our region are looking for other ways to raise their concerns about maternity care, particularly those provided at Toowoomba Hospital,\u201d Chief Executive Annette Scott PSM said.<\/p>\n

The move follows recent criticism of the Toowoomba Hospital maternity service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms Scott said the appointment of Karen McDonald Smith to the new role was designed to complement, not replace, the health services\u2019 existing complaints processes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ABC reported last year that a workplace culture review had been undertaken at the health service after senior figures within the maternity unit had resigned.<\/p>\n

Several women later alleged serious complications with their pregnancies had been missed.<\/p>\n

Ms McDonald Smith said her new role would give her “a unique opportunity to make improvements for women accessing our maternity services\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether women are currently pregnant, have already given birth, or are simply seeking information about birthing at a hospital on the Darling Downs, I\u2019m here to answer questions, talk through their concerns, and help them understand what support and feedback pathways are available,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can help women make sense of their experience, talk through concerns, and, if needed, guide them to the appropriate feedback or support processes, all while ensuring they feel heard and respected.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Midwife Guide can be contacted by women from across the Darling Downs Health region on 0448-305-044 between 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n
