The massive Kings Royal three-day weekend at Kingaroy Speedway had everything … soaring temperatures, a storm, doorhandle-to-doorhandle racing and crashes galore!<\/p>\n

The Kings Royal is Australia’s richest race meeting for Modified sedans and attracts the best drivers from across Queensland and interstate.<\/p>\n

A total of 73 Modifieds started the weekend, however, after 35 heats, four qualifiers, nine dashes, the C Main and B Main, 24 racers lined up on the grid on Sunday night for the $15,000 Kings Royal final.<\/p>\n

The early stages of the 50-lap race were hotly contested with drivers three wide on the track at times, and the leaders forced to negotiate back markers.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, a large pile-up on Lap 21 took out the leaders: Dylan Barrow, Brad Wicks, Nathan MacDonald and Max Clarke.<\/p>\n

Barrow, Wicks and Clarke had been the three fastest drivers across the weekend, so this crash left the rest of the race wide open.<\/p>\n

However, the attrition continued, with just seven drivers left at the half-way point after another huge pile-up on Lap 24.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then as the laps ticked down, there were just four: Darcy Wilson and Darran Lester, and a lap behind, Glenn Truin and Tim Atkin.<\/p>\n

Queenslander Lester had been managing to stave off Victorian Wilson but, with the rain beginning to threaten again, Wilson managed to slide past Lester on the third last lap and roared away.<\/p>\n

Wilson, who had started the night in seventh spot, then took the chequered flag and was crowned King of Kingaroy in the rain.<\/p>\n

Josh Harm, who was caught up in one of the earlier crashes, was the highest finishing South Burnett driver, ending up in 16th spot.<\/p>\n

Footnote: Almost as popular as the Modifieds racing across the three days, was the chaotic showdown between the Mascots on Saturday night. The big money was on Kingaroy Speedway’s Roy, although others were backing local heroes Bacon Man, Avo Joe or The Eagle (South Burnett Rugby League).\u00a0 But the winner was … Mario, representing Tyreright Kingaroy, from Speedy (Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway). We think Queensland Police’s Constable Clancy probably had a flat foot …\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
