{"id":368458,"date":"2026-01-23T14:22:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T04:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=368458"},"modified":"2026-01-23T14:47:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T04:47:12","slug":"health-unit-issues-measles-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2026\/01\/23\/health-unit-issues-measles-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Unit Issues Measles Alert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>January 23, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Darling Downs Public Health Unit is urging the community to be on alert for measles symptoms after a case was confirmed in Toowoomba.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Liam Flynn said the alert was being issued due to the highly contagious nature of measles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of exposure sites is limited in this instance but we continue to take the disease seriously,\u201d Dr Flynn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeasles is not a mild illness. It is a serious viral infection that can lead to complications. It spreads through tiny droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Babies aged under 12 months, people who are not fully vaccinated and those with weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Darling Downs Health spokesperson said anyone who was at the following locations during the times listed should monitor for symptoms for the next three weeks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brisbane Airport (International Arrivals terminal) &#8211; Thursday, January 15, 7:00pm\u20139:00pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Toowoomba Medical and Dental Centre (including Urgent Care Clinic) &#8211; Tuesday, January 20, 7:30am\u20139:35am<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The sites do not pose an ongoing risk to people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Symptoms usually begin 7\u201310 days after exposure, but may take up to three weeks, and include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough and red eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A blotchy red rash that starts on the face and spreads across the body<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People with symptoms should phone their GP to arrange testing or call 13HEALTH (13-43-25-84) for free advice.<\/p>\n<p>Do not visit medical centres, hospitals, schools, workplaces or public spaces without calling ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo doses of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine give lifelong protection against measles. If you\u2019re unsure of your vaccination history, it is safe to have another dose.
