The Illicit Tobacco Taskforce – led by Australian Border Force – says its has disrupted a prominent organised crime network after raids on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n

An ABF spokesperson said Operation Lighthouse had achieved a significant outcome against a criminal supply chain.<\/p>\n

“Intelligence into the Queensland-based network – believed to be linked to an outlaw motorcycle gang, indicated the group was illegally importing illicit tobacco and vapes as well as operating retail outlets across Queensland and northern NSW,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

Taskforce officers, supported by the Australian Federal Police and Queensland Health, executed warrants at two storage sheds in Robina and Burleigh.<\/p>\n

About 1.1 million illicit cigarettes and 9000 illegal vapes were allegedly located worth more than $2 million in evaded excise duty.<\/p>\n

Illicit Tobacco and Vape Enforcement Commander Greg Dowse said the result reflected the continued pressure being placed on criminals attempting to exploit Australia’s tobacco market.\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAustralians must understand that when they buy illicit tobacco, they are directly funding organised crime syndicates – every dollar in the pockets of these gangs supports violence, and other serious crimes,” Commander Dowse said.\u200b<\/p>\n
