Battery energy storage systems (BESS) developments have joined the list of renewable energy projects which are now “impact assessable” in Queensland.<\/p>\n

The latest changes by the State Government, which join similar legislation for solar and wind farms, aim to give communities and councils a stronger voice in decision-making.<\/p>\n

Under the\u00a0“Planning (Battery Storage Facilities) and Other Legislation Amendment Regulation 2025”, large stand-alone BESS projects of 50MW or more must now undertake a social impact assessment and agree with the local government on community benefits before lodging a development application.<\/p>\n

They will also be impact assessable, meaning mandatory community consultation and a consistent approach to assessment.<\/p>\n

The Local Government Association of Queensland had called for BESS projects to be included in renewable energy planning reforms.<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the changes were about fairness, safety and ensuring communities had confidence in the planning process.<\/p>\n
