The Department of Education has been consulting with the local community about whether or not Year 10 should be reinstated at Yarraman P-9 State School.<\/p>\n

A survey was sent home to parents prior to the recent school holidays but Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said there was still time for residents to share their thoughts, or make a formal submission to the Department.<\/p>\n

Emails should be sent to: RegionalOperations.DDSW@qed.qld.gov.au<\/a> by Friday, October 17.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A meeting with departmental officials has also been scheduled to be held in the Yarraman P-9 School Hall from 5:00pm on Monday, October 13. Parents and community members have been invited to attend.<\/p>\n

Yarraman State School lost its Year 10 class in 2014, becoming a P-9 (ie. Prep to Year 9).<\/p>\n

Since then Year 10 Yarraman students have been forced to catch a bus daily to Nanango to attend Nanango State High School.<\/p>\n

A group of parents have been lobbying to get Year 10 reinstated.<\/p>\n

They believe the extra travel is too much, particularly for students who live in Benarkin who have to catch a bus to Blackbutt, then another to Yarraman, and then another to Nanango.<\/p>\n

There is also the added expense for parents of buying a new set of NSHS uniforms – and a laptop – for students who only intend to go to Year 10 before starting a trade.<\/p>\n

The parents have set up a Facebook page<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as part of their campaign.<\/p>\n

Mrs Frecklington, who met with the parents in July, said the community consultation period was an important chance for the community\u2019s voice to be heard.<\/p>\n
