An ASX-listed mining exploration company has acquired the permit for an historic gold mining area near Tansey.<\/p>\n

NewPeak Metals issued a statement to the ASX on Monday saying it had acquired Goldstrike Mining Pty Ltd, owner of EPM26368 located about 20km north of Goomeri.<\/p>\n

The 12 sq km exploration permit area encompasses several historic workings including the South Burnett Gold Mine, the Star of Dawn and several smaller unnamed mines.<\/p>\n

The underground South Burnett Gold Mine, located on a property owned at the time by the Kiehne family, was mined to a depth of about 87m between 1934-42.<\/p>\n

NewPeak Metals said wartime labour shortages and other factors, including a lack of funds, contributed to the mine’s closure.<\/p>\n

Mining and exploration permits for the area have passed though several owners in the decades since.<\/p>\n

The ASX statement said NewPeak plans to conduct drilling and low-cost district-scale exploration to better understand the geology of the area.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recently appointed NewPeak managing director Mark Purcell said the Tansey Gold Project was in an under-explored area close to highways and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

He said modern exploration techniques would provide fresh opportunities for drill targeting.<\/p>\n

“This is a low-cost, high-potential acquisition. The South Burnett Mine has not been comprehensively explored, notwithstanding attractive historical mining grades,” Mr Purcell said.<\/p>\n
