{"id":361660,"date":"2025-06-16T18:54:31","date_gmt":"2025-06-16T08:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=361660"},"modified":"2026-03-17T18:46:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:46:29","slug":"qld-bid-to-stop-tomato-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2025\/06\/16\/qld-bid-to-stop-tomato-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Qld Bid To Stop Tomato Virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>June 16, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A control order was put in place in Queensland on Monday (June 16) in a bid to stop the highly contagious tomato brown rugose fruit virus from entering the State.<\/p>\n<p>The virus, which affects tomatoes, capsicums and chillies, does not pose any risk to human health.<\/p>\n<p>It causes yellow and brown spots to appear on leaves, fruit and stems. Infected fruit can also be deformed or ripen irregularly.<\/p>\n<p>The virus spreads easily through contaminated equipment, vehicles, tools, hands, packaging, clothing and by direct plant-to-plant contact.<\/p>\n<p>It can also be carried by seeds and transmitted through grafting, irrigation water and contaminated soil.<\/p>\n<p>It is considered a threat to Australia&#8217;s vegetable industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The virus was first reported in 2014 on tomatoes in Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has since been reported in Europe, the Middle East, China, Mexico and California.<\/p>\n<p>It was first detected in Australia in August last year in South Australia, and then in Victoria in January.<\/p>\n<p>On May 29,\u00a0 the National Management Group announced it was no longer possible to eradicate the virus from Australia.<\/p>\n<p>To help keep Queensland free,\u00a0 the control order went into effect on Monday to restrict the movement of carriers into Queensland.<\/p>\n<div id=\"component_572866\">\n<p>Home gardeners have also been urged to monitor plants and only source clean seed, seedlings and material from credible suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>They should also remove any wild tomato plants and weeds such as nightshade that could act as reservoirs for the virus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>More information about the new movement controls and the virus is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business.qld.gov.au\/industries\/farms-fishing-forestry\/agriculture\/alerts\/tomato-brown-rugose-fruit-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available online<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>UPDATE 1: This control order was renewed on December 16, 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>UPDATE 2: This control order was renewed on March 16, 2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A control order was put in place on Monday in a bid to stop tomato brown rugose fruit virus from entering Queensland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":361662,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,36],"tags":[1134],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
