“There’s No Excuse For Domestic Abuse” … this is the message the Murgon Mustangs promotes every year at their huge Domestic Violence Awareness rugby league round.<\/p>\n

The big day last Saturday at Murgon Showgrounds featured a string of mini junior games played all day, round-robin style, across six fields.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the day is always the A Grade local derby between the Murgon Mustangs and the Cherbourg Hornets, competing for the “No Excuse For Domestic Abuse” Shield.<\/p>\n

Before the game began, a minute’s silence was held for the victims of domestic violence.<\/p>\n

“DV is a scourge on Australian society which sadly is evident on the news almost daily,” club president Wayne Gscheidle said.<\/p>\n

“Today we recognise the blight in our community and take a stand against violence towards women and children.”<\/p>\n

Former club president Ian “Chook” Wilson, who died in a road crash at Manyung on May 16, was also acknowledged at the official opening.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Domestic Violence Awareness day was sponsored by South Burnett CTC, Graham House, CRAICCHS and Uniting Care (which runs the safe house at Cherbourg).<\/p>\n

Community stalls were set up in the grounds offering information about local support services.<\/p>\n

It was a big day for the Murgon club everywhere except on the field … the Hornets delivered a thumping defeat to the Mustangs 58-12 in the Shield game (despite Murgon putting the first points on the board).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cherbourg try scorers were Mason Watson (2), Keith Gadd Jnr (2), Lloyd Langton (2), Dominique Sandow, Steven Walsh, George Fisher and Elwyn Fewquandie. George Fisher kicked nine conversions.<\/p>\n

Murgon try scorers were Sonny Weazel and Lennox Bligh. Jayden Tewes-Smallwood kicked two conversions.<\/p>\n

The second A Grade game played at Murgon on Saturday was a showdown between the Kingaroy Red Ants and Wondai Wolves, played in the late afternoon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was a much closer contest than the earlier A Grade game.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy and Wondai went try for try in the first half before the Red Ants got the upper hand in the second stanza.<\/p>\n

At full-time, Kingaroy was ahead 24-16 after leading 12-10 at half-time.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy try scorers were Kaia Williams, Andre Woltmann, Christopher Bond and Mitchell Bailey. Bond kicked four conversions.<\/p>\n

Wondai tries were scored by Rocky Taian, Siolame\u00a0Fituafe and Daniel Alberts. Torren Anderton kicked two conversions.<\/p>\n
