{"id":358107,"date":"2025-03-05T13:48:35","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T03:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=358107"},"modified":"2025-03-05T13:48:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T03:48:35","slug":"bee-pest-detected-in-lockyer-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2025\/03\/05\/bee-pest-detected-in-lockyer-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Bee Pest Detected In Lockyer Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_150879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150879\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-150879\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/varroamite-285x177.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A varroa mite parasite on the back of a honey bee (Photo: USDA-ARS\/Steve Ausmus)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 5, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biosecurity Queensland is testing samples from beehives in the Lockyer Valley after fears the Varroa destructor mite has crossed the NSW border into Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson said initial samples from a recreational apiary had returned a positive diagnostic result for the mite.<\/p>\n<p>Further samples from recreational and commercial apiaries have been collected and are undergoing testing to confirm the presence of Varroa destructor and also check for other exotic pests and diseases.<\/p>\n<p>DPI Director-General and Chief Biosecurity Officer Dr Rachel Chay said more detections into Queensland\u2019s border regions were expected in the coming months due to natural spread from NSW.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u201cBiosecurity Queensland has been preparing for this event and is working closely with the affected beekeepers to slow the spread of varroa mite and help guide management practices,\u201d Dr Chay said.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve joined all other States and Territories in shifting our focus from eradication to management to safeguard Queensland\u2019s valuable honeybee industry and recreational beekeeping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQueensland&#8217;s Varroa Mite Biosecurity Zone remains in place, which restricts the movement of bees, beehives and beekeeping equipment from States and Territories with varroa mite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to supporting the beekeeping industry by working alongside individual beekeepers, peak industry bodies and a dedicated biosecurity champion network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Queensland Beekeepers\u2019 Association President Jacob Stevens said the first detection of varroa destructor in Queensland had been expected for some time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to the Queensland beekeepers who have reported varroa mite. Unfortunately these reports come as no surprise,\u201d Mr Stevens said.<\/p>\n<p>All beekeepers are urged to remain vigilant and undertake monthly hive health checks to determine varroa mite presence.<\/p>\n<p>All results should be reported to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/survey123.arcgis.com\/share\/e7fb92e833744be7b2b32d25981779bf?portalUrl=https:\/\/qportal.information.qld.gov.au\/arcgis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bee 123 online form<\/a><\/strong>, even if no mites are found.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately report unexpected hive deaths, deformed bees, bees with parasites, poor brood patterns and dead brood to Biosecurity Queensland on 13-25-23.<\/p>\n<p>Varroa development officers can provide advice to all Queensland beekeepers in early detection and integrated pest management principles. Varroa mites have been previously detected in North Queensland in 2016 and in Brisbane earlier this year but they were of the Varroa jacobsoni variety, not the more serious Varroa destructor which
