The South Burnett community has been asked to \u201cBe Prepared But Not Alarmed\u201d as Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaches the south-east Queensland coast.<\/p>\n

At 4:00pm on Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology said the intensity of the cyclone was currently Category 1, with winds near the centre at 85km\/h and gusts up to 120km\/h.<\/p>\n

It was located 480km east of Maroochydore, travelling south-east at 14km\/h.<\/p>\n

BOM said TC Alfred was expected to slow and turn west towards the Queensland coast from Tuesday.<\/p>\n

It was expected to intensify to a Category 2\u00a0on Monday night as its south-eastwards movement slowed.\u00a0 Its intensity might fluctuate between Category 1 and 2 while it remains off the coast during Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n

As it approaches the coast on Thursday, Alfred is expected to maintain intensity as a Category 2 cyclone and make landfall between Brisbane and Sunshine Coast late on Thursday or Friday morning.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff said Council and the Local Disaster Management Group were keeping a close watch on the cyclone’s possible path inland from the coast.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will know more obviously as the forecasts are updated in the coming days and we would encourage residents to think about their plan if the region was to be impacted, particularly from further rainfall across the catchment,\u201d Mayor Duff said.<\/p>\n

Council will continue to monitor the situation with the State Government and Emergency Alerts will be issued as, and if, required.<\/p>\n
