{"id":357859,"date":"2025-02-27T16:20:11","date_gmt":"2025-02-27T06:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=357859"},"modified":"2025-02-28T22:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T12:39:15","slug":"tasleigh-wins-youth-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2025\/02\/27\/tasleigh-wins-youth-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasleigh Wins Youth Of The Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_357861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-357861\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-357861 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20250226lions1-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-357861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kingaroy Lions Club 2025 Youth of the Year Tasleigh Gangemi with judge Jason Erbacher and Kingaroy Lions Club president Chris Robins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>February 27, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kingaroy Lions Club&#8217;s Youth Of The Year competition attracted a big field of 13 students this week eager to take out the prestigious title.<\/p>\n<p>The program aims to foster and encourage leadership qualities in young people.<\/p>\n<p>The Kingaroy entrants faced a string of face-to-face interviews on Tuesday followed by a public speaking competition on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The judges took into account the community and cultural involvement of the entrants as well as their academic and public speaking skills.<\/p>\n<p>All but of the two of the entrants came from Kingaroy State High School.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The final speeches &#8211; a prepared speech as well as an impromptu speech &#8211; were made in front of an audience of club members and supporters at Kingaroy RSL Club.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three judges were South Burnett CTC CEO Jason Erbacher;\u00a0 retired KSHS deputy principal Tracey Reinbott and retired NAB manager Mike Barrett.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Erbacher said it hade been a pleasure to get to know each of the young people.<\/p>\n<p>He said it had been a strong field and deciding the winners had been a tough decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really tight and super close,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Public Speaking Award went to KSHS student Talleah Smith.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Talleah is an accomplished dancer, volunteers at the Kingaroy Eisteddfod and is completing a Certificate III in community pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>He speech topic was &#8220;Social Media And Teens&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasleigh Gangemi, from Kingaroy State High School, was named the 2025 Kingaroy Lions Youth of the Year. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her speech topic was &#8220;Psychology Should Be A Compulsory Subject In High School&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Tasleigh is a 2025 KSHS captain, president of the Student Council, plays the saxophone in the school&#8217;s symphonic band, teaches dancing and represents the South Burnett in netball.<\/p>\n<p>She will now go on to compete at the regional competition, which is being hosted by the Kingaroy club, on March 8.<\/p>\n<p><em>Footnote: Three of the students&#8217; speeches focussed on the importance of maintaining pill-testing in Queensland to stop accidental drug deaths. The current pill-testing trial is due to end on April 19.
