A project to refurbish one of Tarong Power Station\u2019s landmark cooling towers has been completed after months of hard work.<\/p>\n

Stanwell General Manager Southern Generation Mick Joy said\u00a0 Tarong’s assets and engineering team had successfully completed the refurbishment of the 116m tall cooling tower which services the Unit 1 and 2 generators.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompleting a refurbishment of this scale is no small feat,\u201d Mr Joy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe project started in June 2023, with 50 workers taking around 27,000 hours over the past year and half to complete it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe top panels of the cooling tower have now been replaced, 89 sq m of concrete repair completed as well as other measures implemented to improve structural integrity and avoid future deterioration which will extend the cooling tower\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a collective effort thanks to the ongoing dedication of many teams across the site with a special shoutout to station engineering, site services execution, site services operations, procurement and corporate engineering.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important investment in the long-term safety, operational efficiency, and reliability of our cooling towers and Tarong Power Station, ensuring we can continue to safely generate energy for our customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Unit 3 and 4 cooling tower will also undergo a refurbishment later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooling towers condense steam back into water.<\/p>\n

The steam has been driving the turbines which generate electricity. The cooled water is then pumped back into a boiler to restart the process.<\/p>\n
