Queensland: Beautiful one day, raining the next … \u00a0a drizzly, overcast day put a chill on the outside activities at the Queensland Week celebrations at Blackbutt at the weekend, but inside the Memorial Hall, the music was pumping.<\/p>\n

The Windy City Jazzmen provided a musical backdrop for local residents who gathered in the hall on Sunday to enjoy hot soup, damper and a warming lunch and peruse artwork by children from the Benarkin and Blackbutt state schools.<\/p>\n

The day’s activities culminated in the presentation of “Valuing Community Awards”, presented by South Burnett Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell.<\/p>\n

Ralph Tennant, a long-time volunteer with the Taromeo Rural Fire Brigade, was presented with an award in appreciation on his “outstanding volunteer services” to the community.<\/p>\n

Ralph thanked the Taromeo Rural Fire Brigade for nominating him for the award and “for putting up with me”. He also thanked his wife for washing his dirty overalls after a fire, and for putting up with him getting up at 2:00am when called to an emergency.<\/p>\n

The Timbertown Woodworking Group Inc was presented with an award for “actively enhancing community engagement”.<\/p>\n

Group president Bob Robey thanked his members for always being ready to help the community whenever called upon.<\/p>\n

Deputy Mayor Campbell thanked Friends of Cultcha for organising the Queensland Week celebration, and in particular, Laraine Aniftos for her hard work.<\/p>\n

Queensland Week celebrates Queensland’s official separation from NSW. On June 6, 1859, Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent confirming Queensland’s status as an independent colony.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
