The caring cooks from South Burnett Baked Relief are at it again, this time helping out families who have been hit by the recent storms and flash flooding.<\/p>\n

Deliveries of baked treats – cakes, biscuits and slices – were made around the South Burnett by volunteers on Friday and at the weekend, with more planned.<\/p>\n

Baked Relief is an informal group of South Burnett residents who try to provide “gifts of love” to people who have suffered a natural disaster such as a flood, drought, bushfire or storm.<\/p>\n

Beck Cross, from Kumbia, is one of the organisers of the group.<\/p>\n

She delivered the latest batch of baked goods to the South Burnett Regional Council on Monday for distribution by Mayor Kathy Duff and her fellow councillors.<\/p>\n

“The idea is to give a small gift to people so they know that that they are not forgotten, that they are not alone.” Beck said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The original Baked Relief movement was established by Danielle Crismani in Brisbane after the 2011 floods.<\/p>\n

She came up with the idea to start baking to provide some treats for the State Emergency Services volunteers who were sandbagging around Brisbane.<\/p>\n

She put the word out about what she was doing on social media and offers of help and baking came rushing in.<\/p>\n

The South Burnett version of Baked Relief started during the 2014 drought, kicked off by Georgie Somerset and Kristy Frahm and members of the Queensland Regional and Remote Women\u2019s Network.<\/p>\n

Since then it has sprung into action several times to provide relief.<\/p>\n

It was activated again last week after the latest storms with the Wooroolin Lions Club members among the first to jump into action, donating Christmas cakes.<\/p>\n

Anyone who would like to contribute baked goods (see below) to be distributed to local families can drop them off at the South Burnett Regional Council’s Kingaroy office in Glendon Street, or at Nanango Real Estate in Drayton Street.<\/strong><\/p>\n

WHAT TO BAKE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Biscuits, slices and uniced fruitcake work best. Consider items that pack and transport well and do not require refrigeration (ie. baking that will keep unrefrigerated for 10 days, no icing, no fruit). Cakes can be left whole, and biscuits\/slices can be divided into smaller packs for distribution. Examples include fruit cakes, Anzac biscuits etc<\/p>\n

STORAGE<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Takeaway food containers are ideal for packing as they are easily stacked into larger boxes for transport. Alternatively, pack items in ziplock bags or securely wrap them. The last thing we want is your precious baking to end up broken or falling onto the ground during transport. If you\u2019re able to pop your packages into a box or shopping bag to help with distribution that would be very helpful.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s is important to each container with the ingredients\u00a0 used. This is helps people who may have intolerance or allergies to avoid getting sick. You may also like to include a message to the families of the South Burnett to let them know we are thinking about them.<\/p>\n
