January 16, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

A funeral will be held in Cherbourg on Friday (January 17) for former Cherbourg councillor Bronwyn Murray (nee Douglas).<\/p>\n

Ms Murray, 49, died on January 5 after a short illness.<\/p>\n

She was elected to Council at the 2020 election and served during the difficult pandemic years when the Shire was put into compulsory lockdown.<\/p>\n

As restrictions lifted, Cr Murray threw herself into community activities, including NAIDOC Week and RUOK Day, and was a loud voice in the campaigns against domestic and family violence in the region through her involvement with Uniting Care.<\/p>\n

She was also an advocate for improved policing, taking part in meetings with local police to discuss juvenile justice issues in the community.<\/p>\n

Prior to be elected, Cr Murray was involved in other community programs in Cherbourg, including working as a facilitator in the successful Triple P Positive Parenting Program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She re-stood at the 2024 Council election but failed to secure enough votes.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the time, she said she had thoroughly enjoyed her term on Cherbourg Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always excited about coming to Council meetings, especially if there was something on the agenda that I wanted to discuss,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe, we did what we could in the time we had, especially in our capacity during the COVID period, and the way we supported our community, bringing them through those hardship times, particularly in the area of mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were some stresses, but they were overcome quickly. The work here has been really good, and we can get better and do things at a larger scale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Murray’s funeral will be held from 1:00pm on Friday in the Cherbourg Community Hall.\u00a0 Friends and family members have been invited to attend the service.<\/strong><\/p>\n
