The Federal Government’s Select Committee on Nuclear Energy will be sitting in Nanango next week to collect submissions on the future of nuclear power generation in Australia.<\/p>\n

The hearing will be held at the Nanango RSL Club from 8:30am on Thursday, November 14, and is open to the public to attend.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, although anyone can attend the hearing, only those invited to give evidence will be able to speak.<\/p>\n

southburnett.com.au<\/strong> understands that South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff and several councillors are on the witness list.<\/p>\n

Anti-renewables campaigner Jim Willmott also announced on social media this week (at right) that he will be a witness.<\/p>\n

The House Select Committee on Nuclear Energy was established by a resolution that passed the House of Representatives on October 10 (see below).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The committee is required to present its final report by April 30, 2025.<\/p>\n

As well as conducting hearings, the Select Committee is also accepting written submissions but these close on November 15, ie. the day after the Nanango event.<\/p>\n

The role of the House Select Committee on Nuclear Energy is to inquire into and report on the consideration of nuclear power generation, including deployment of small modular reactors, in Australia, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Deployment timeframes;<\/li>\n
  2. Fuel supply, and transport of fuel;<\/li>\n
  3. Uranium enrichment capability;<\/li>\n
  4. Waste management, transport and storage;<\/li>\n
  5. Water use and impacts on other water uses;<\/li>\n
  6. Relevant energy infrastructure capability, including brownfield sites and transmission lines;<\/li>\n
  7. Federal, State, Territory and local government legal and policy frameworks;<\/li>\n
  8. Risk management for natural disasters or any other safety concerns;<\/li>\n
  9. Potential share of total energy system mix;<\/li>\n
  10. Necessary land acquisition;<\/li>\n
  11. Costs of deploying, operating and maintaining nuclear power stations;<\/li>\n
  12. The impact of the deployment, operation and maintenance of nuclear power stations on electricity affordability; and<\/li>\n
  13. Any other relevant matter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
