The South Burnett has produced some fine female cricketers in recent years … Courtney Sippel, Holly Ferling, Abby Burrows and Charlotte Love just to name a few.<\/p>\n

However, Wide Bay Cricket are keen to encourage even more girls into the game and are developing plans to hold a four-team junior female competition – possibly based at Murgon – after Christmas.<\/p>\n

To test interest in such a competition, a skills development day was held at the Alan Downie Sports Fields in Nanango on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Wide Bay Cricket manager Pira Nirmalendran, Wide Bay junior girls director of coaching Peter Abra and Cordalba State School sports instructor Brett McLellan joined Nanango Scorpions’ Abby Burrows to put the young cricketers through their paces in the nets and on the pitch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fourteen girls aged 9 to 15 from across the Wide Bay region – including Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Gympie and the South Burnett – took part in the Junior Female Development Day.<\/p>\n

They practised fielding, batting and bowling before taking part in a mini-cricket match, batting in pairs and taking turns at bowling.<\/p>\n

Peter Abra said the proposed all-girls competition would not feature town-based squads, rather mixed teams from across the Wide Bay region.<\/p>\n
