Work on Stanwell\u2019s Tarong Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has reached the halfway mark.<\/p>\n

The $514 million project is part of the State Government’s aim to turn Tarong Power Station into a “clean energy hub”<\/p>\n

Construction on the 300MW \/ 600MWh project began in August last year, and is expected to be fully operational by mid next-year.<\/p>\n

A total of 164 Tesla Megapack 2XL battery units have been lifted into place – enough to power 101,000 homes for two hours.<\/p>\n

Work is now under way to connect them to transformers.<\/p>\n

Yurika was contracted to install the units, with the support of local contractors who provided services including civil works, cranes, plumbing, concrete supplies and quarry materials.<\/p>\n

Stanwell and Yurika are also building a $747 million 300MW \/ 1200MWh BESS at the Stanwell Power Station near Rockhampton capable of supplying energy into the grid for up to four hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stanwell CEO Michael O\u2019Rourke said the two BESS projects would play a crucial role in stabilising the energy supply from clean renewable sources.<\/p>\n

“They\u2019ll be able to be charged by sources like wind and solar and pumped back into the grid during periods of high demand,” Mr O’Rourke said.<\/p>\n

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said the batteries would deliver reliable power to the energy grid.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen batteries like this are publicly owned it means Queenslanders themselves benefit, not overseas shareholders,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to ensure we maintain downward pressure on power bills for all Queenslanders by building more renewable energy and storage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other BESS projects in the local region include a proposed 500MW facility by Akaysha Energy at Ellesmere; and a 200MW project by Equis Australia at Lower Wonga.<\/p>\n
