Saturday was Oaks Day – traditionally Ladies Day – at Eagle Farm in Brisbane but at the Kumbia races, it was truly a “day for the ladies” after female jockeys rode all five winners.<\/p>\n

Apprentice Billie-Rose Derbyshire won the first race on Serbian Singer and the third on Amber Ale, but Taylor Williams, Cecily Eaton and Tamara Tincknell also enjoyed wins.<\/p>\n

A good crowd turned out at the track despite overcast weather that threatened rain all day (and ultimately did turn into light rain not long after the last race).<\/p>\n

The meeting was a bonus given to the Kumbia Race Club by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, who attended the Club’s Melbourne Cup Day Race last year to make good on an election promise.<\/p>\n

The club was awarded the extra meeting as part of the 2013-14 “Sustain Country Series” introduced by the State Government to “reinvigorate” country racing.<\/p>\n

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington was on the track on Saturday, both as sponsor of the third race and as one of the judges of the popular Fashions Of The Field competition.<\/p>\n

Race club President Brian Lenihan said that he was “very pleased” with the turnout, which attracted many visitors from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast as well as locals.<\/p>\n

The club’s next meeting will be on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday November 5.<\/p>\n
