South Burnett Regional Council’s push for a moratorium on renewable energy projects was debated at the Australian Local Government Association conference in Canberra on Thursday.<\/p>\n

However, Mayor Kathy Duff amended the motion, changing the call for “a moratorium” on renewables projects to a “review”, before it was put to a vote.<\/p>\n

“This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to call for a moratorium on renewable energy and regulate …” <\/em>was changed to<\/p>\n

“This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to review renewable energy projects and regulate …”<\/em><\/p>\n

Randwick City Council spoke against the motion, saying almost 40 per cent of electricity was already coming from renewable energy sources, and time was running out to reach targets.<\/p>\n

The Randwick councillor said there was a need to push forward to 100 per cent renewable power.<\/p>\n

A representative from Snowy Valleys Council backed the South Burnett’s push, saying people in metropolitan Sydney did not understand what was happening.<\/p>\n

The motion was eventually carried by 109 votes to 80.<\/p>\n

Speaking later, Mayor Kathy Duff said it was obvious there was strong support for the motion in the room.<\/p>\n
