Wondai RSL Sub-Branch is seeking feedback from local residents about a proposal to build a new war memorial for the town.<\/p>\n

Secretary David Scrimgeour said a community meeting would be held at the Wondai Diggers Club from 2:00pm on Thursday, June 27, to discuss plans to create a Monument between the club and the Wondai swimming pool.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Sub-Branch approached the South Burnett Regional Council in September last year to take on a trustee lease of the strip of land.<\/p>\n

David said the area was currently marked out by four red-and-white poles.<\/p>\n

He said the Sub-Branch had become worried someone could get seriously hurt during Anzac Day commemorations at the current Monument, where crowds spill out on to the road.<\/p>\n

“It is too dangerous at present, especially on Anzac Day because people are standing in the middle of the road,” David said.<\/p>\n

He said he had seen people – even pushing wheelie-walkers – still standing on the roadway after the streets had reopened to traffic.<\/p>\n

“This would be a community project and it is important that we find out what the community would like to do with the area,” David said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He said the Sub-Branch had its own thoughts about what it would like to do with the area, but would like feedback from the community, especially from organisations and schools that take part in the annual commemorations.<\/p>\n

A small model has been built which will be on display at the community meeting.<\/p>\n

If the project goes ahead, the existing Monument would remain in front of the hall while the new memorial would be built, facing Mackenzie Street, on the leased land.<\/p>\n

Marches would still be held, but they would run along the Rail Trail to the new memorial, meaning that Traffic Management Plans – which costs the Council thousands of dollars every year – would no longer be necessary.<\/p>\n

People who cannot attend the community meeting have been invited to contact David with their suggestions by email<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n
