I knew I needed to get in contact with the dealership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After speaking to one of the employees at the dealership, Sara quickly realised her customer was about to be scammed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to the person she had been dealing with face-to-face,&#8221; Sara said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I ran him through the details on the invoice and he confirmed that they were not correct. He hadn\u2019t even sent her an email that day.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NAB executive (group investigations) Chris Sheehan said invoice scams were often incredibly subtle and sophisticated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey occur when criminals hack into a business\u2019 email account and change the account details on legitimate invoices,\u201d Mr Sheehan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe criminals hope the recipient doesn\u2019t notice the doctored account details and pays them, instead of the intended business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReal estate, legal and construction sectors are traditional targets, while Scamwatch has received recent reports from car dealerships, travel companies and their customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says Australians lost $92 million to payment redirection scams in 2023, down from the $225 million the year prior but still significant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sara started work at the NAB five months ago.<\/p>\n<p>She said her training about how to spot scam red flags ensured she was alert to the dangers of suspicious activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trained to double check the details because we know there are so many things that can go wrong between the emails,\u201d Sara said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might take a little bit longer, and we might need to ask some more questions, but we\u2019re doing it to keep the customer safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve worked hard for their money, we don\u2019t want to let it get into the hands of criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A quick-thinking bank employee in Kingaroy has saved a woman from accidentally transferring a six-figure sum of money to a criminal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":348598,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[5,3,24],"tags":[21,1132],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
