Overnight campers – and local picnickers – at Nanango’s Tipperary Flat park can now warm themselves around an open pit fire.<\/p>\n

Local councillor Jane Erkens and friends came up with idea; the local Schloss family donated the metal fire pit and the South Burnett Regional Council made the plan a reality.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff officially opened the fire pit on Sunday afternoon, and then joined in toasting marshmallows.<\/p>\n

The event also capped off the recent $250,000 upgrade of Tipperary Flat, which was championed by Cr Erkens after she was elected to the Council at a by-election in late 2022.<\/p>\n

The metal fire pit started off life at a mine before being turned into a fire pit by Nanango resident Des Schloss.<\/p>\n

Council then provided the concrete barrier and set up the sandstone seating around the ring.<\/p>\n

Visitors must BYO wood or buy it from the local garage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A mini-competition was held on Sunday to determine who could toast the best marshmallows, which was taken out by Anne-Marie Bazeley.<\/p>\n

Karl Kaye, from Nanango, donated the wood for the opening.<\/p>\n

Cr Erkens praised Council’s parks and gardens staff for their efforts in the project, saying they had really taken pride in the outcome.<\/p>\n

Shedders (local musicians who play at Nanango’s The Shed most Friday nights) provided musical accompaniment to the marshmallow toasting.<\/p>\n
