For the second year in a row, a South Burnett team has taken out the senior men’s final at the Kingaroy Senior Soccer Club’s Soccer 7s carnival after two hectic days of back-to-back games.<\/p>\n

Solomon Kings, made up of players who usually turn out for Kingaroy Islanders, won over Merry Men in the hard-fought Men’s Final on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

At the end of regular time, the scores were tied one-all so the players lined up for the nail-biting – and agonisingly long – penalty shootout.<\/p>\n

The kickers went goal-for-goal through both teams before Kings finally made a breakthrough during their second rotation.<\/p>\n

The large crowd of Solomon Kings supporters went crazy, rushing on to the field to congratulate the players and waving Solomon Islands flags.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many of the players are PALM scheme workers employed by Swickers, which sponsored the team.<\/p>\n

The annual Soccer 7s event attracted 54 teams – plus squads of supporters – to the Tom Alford soccer fields in Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

Games were played in three categories (Men, Women and Over 35s) across eight pools, which meant they were often being contested simultaneously on adjacent fields.<\/p>\n

There were even several games also played on the nearby rugby league warm-up field at T.J. O’Neill Oval.<\/p>\n

The finals of the three categories were played on Sunday afternoon, with much enthusiastic cheering from the sidelines.<\/p>\n

The Women’s Final, between Misfits & Mishaps and\u00a0 Caboolture Cobras, also went to a penalty shootout, accompanied by roars from supporters on the sidelines.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, the winner of the Over 35s contest was clear at the end of regular time, with Gympie United locking in the win over Tiger Kings 3-0.<\/p>\n

Kingaroy Senior Soccer Club president Steve Copas thanked the teams which had travelled to Kingaroy to take part, as well as the club volunteers who had worked so hard throughout the weekend to keep things running smoothly.<\/p>\n

He also thanked the volunteers from the Kingaroy Touch Football Club which ran the bar and canteen.<\/p>\n
