January 27, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n

South Burnett Regional Council, the Nanango Business Alliance and Nanango Show Society hosted a big crowd at Nanango\u2019s exuberant Australia Day event on Friday.<\/p>\n

Activities got under way early in the day with bush poetry led by Bruce Webb and a medley of Australian songs led by Peter Thomson.<\/p>\n

After this, volunteers served up a hearty free breakfast of bacon, baked beans, sausages, scrambled eggs and toast for a crowd of about 300 who patiently queued up near the Showground’s undercover canteen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cr Jane Erkens recognised of Nanango’s winners at the 2024 South Burnett Australia Day Award winners: Joe Skok (aka Charlie Spagalli) and Sue Wallis.<\/p>\n

Local singer James Webb performed the National Anthem during the flag-raising.<\/p>\n

At 9:00am, attention switched to the main oval for the day’s athletic challenges.<\/strong><\/p>\n

These included the popular dog-jumping competitions (one for small dogs, another for bigger pups), senior and junior gumboot and thong tossing, and tug-o-wars.<\/p>\n

This year, senior and junior contestants also had the opportunity to take part in two-truck pulling competitions where they tried to shift fire engines.<\/p>\n

The day’s activities wound down about 11:00am with a formal thank you to the sponsors, community groups and volunteers who had made the day possible.<\/p>\n

There were also Australia Day functions held at two of Nanango’s hotels and the Nanango RSL Club.<\/p>\n
