The State Government has called tenders to build an exploratory tunnel for the Borumba Pumped Hydro project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Queensland Hydro is moving forward with plans to dig an exploratory tunnel linked to the proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project.<\/p>\n

An Expression of Interest package for contractors interested in undertaking the underground work was released on Friday.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Underground Works – Tunnel Drilling package<\/a><\/strong> is seeking EOIs from suitably qualified contractors who can design and construct an exploratory tunnel at the project site near Imbil.<\/p>\n

The EOI marks a new phase in the exploratory works phase for the Borumba project, expected to run from late 2023 until mid-2026.<\/p>\n

The Tunnel Drilling package will gather geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological data to confirm the proposed location for the underground powerhouse and transformers caverns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the Borumba Project proceeds, the temporary tunnel would\u00a0 likely be converted into one of the access tunnels required in the project design.<\/p>\n

The contract will be awarded in August 2024 with work set to begin in November 2024.<\/p>\n

Work on the exploratory tunnel drilling package will only occur if and when Queensland Hydro receives all necessary environmental and planning approvals.<\/p>\n

If approved, the Borumba Dam pumped hydro project aims to be producing power in 2030.<\/p>\n
