{"id":339634,"date":"2023-10-30T23:29:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T13:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=339634"},"modified":"2024-02-29T17:36:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-29T07:36:24","slug":"kathy-to-run-for-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2023\/10\/30\/kathy-to-run-for-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Kathy To Run For Mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_299831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-299831\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-299831\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08.jpg 740w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08-340x211.jpg 340w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/20210522nanango08-263x163.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-299831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cr Kathy Duff is betting she can win the Mayoralty in 2024 despite a hotly contested field<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>October 30, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Division 5 councillor Kathy Duff announced on social media on Monday night she will run for Mayor of the South Burnett Regional Council.<\/p>\n<p>The Boondooma grazier, and a former executive officer of the LNP&#8217;s Nanango Electorate Council, has served on the SBRC since amalgamation, including a term as Deputy Mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that she served on Wondai Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Duff&#8217;s announcement was greeted by almost 300 &#8220;likes&#8221; on Facebook, including by former SBRC councillor Ros Heit and LNP Federal MPs Llew O&#8217;Brien and Colin Boyce.<\/p>\n<p>It also confirmed media reports that current Mayor Brett Otto &#8211; who has been on paid medical leave since June 21 &#8211; would not be recontesting the March poll.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Duff &#8211; who is possibly best know as &#8220;the lady in pink&#8221; &#8211; said she was humbled to have Mayor Otto&#8217;s support.<\/p>\n<p>The pair have enjoyed a close working relationship during this Council term, often moving and seconding each other&#8217;s motions in a bloc obvious to observers.<\/p>\n<p>The Duff and Otto families also share interests in thoroughbred racehorses and Council records from August showed Cr Duff had made a loan to Otto Racing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cr Duff&#8217;s ambition to stand for mayor has been the South Burnett&#8217;s worst kept secret for months.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, she stated she would make no announcement until Mayor Otto had made his intentions clear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our ratepayers have been met with increasing rates and in many cases, less services. I am ready to lead a council that spends the ratepayer&#8217;s money like it\u2019s their own,&#8221; the announcement said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the last 20 years, I have served as Wondai Shire Councillor, Councillor for Division 5, your South Burnett Deputy Mayor and have travelled over one million kilometres serving our community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have the time, energy and passion to serve our community as your Mayor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cr Duff said she was committed to a five-point plan:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. Reduce Council waste for affordable rates<br \/>\n2. Fix the roads, potholes and drains<br \/>\n3. Bring Council depots back to the towns and restore local pride<br \/>\n4. Cut red tape to give businesses a break<br \/>\n5.
