TAFE Queensland hairdressing teacher Kyla Steinhardt is inviting residents to visit TAFE’s fully operational training salon in Kingaroy for discounted pamper sessions.<\/p>\n

TAFE students undertaking a Certificate II in Salon Assistant course can provide a wide range of services including hair braids, head massages, foils and hair treatments to practice the skills they have learned in their course.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re always keen to welcome new clients to our training salon so the students can practice the practical parts of the course,” Kyla said. <\/strong><\/p>\n

“Our Kingaroy campus salon is open to all community members.<\/p>\n

“At the Certificate II level we don\u2019t do any cutting, but we can do any sort of colouring, head, neck and shoulder massages, braids and blow dries.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s a great opportunity for our clients to enjoy a lovely pamper session.<\/p>\n

“In fact, we often have business owners come in and get their hair done ahead of events, presentations or functions.”<\/p>\n

Local senior high school students complete the 12-month course in a live salon environment at the Kingaroy campus, with the latest industry products and equipment at their fingertips.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eager graduates use it as an opportunity to gain a head start in their hairdressing career.<\/p>\n

“The Certificate II in Salon Assistant course crosses over into Certificate III in Hairdressing, so when students go on to their apprenticeship they\u2019re already ahead with credits for units they\u2019ve completed,” Kyla said.<\/p>\n

As a salon business owner and TAFE Queensland teacher, Kyla has worked in the hairdressing industry for more than 26 years. <\/strong><\/p>\n

“I worked at a local salon through Years 10-12 in a \u2018Tea and Tidy\u2019 role, and at the end of Grade 12 I got offered a full-time apprenticeship,” Kyla said.<\/p>\n

“I also got into university to do a dual degree in arts and teaching, but I deferred and accepted the apprenticeship and never looked back. I loved hairdressing so much.<\/p>\n

“I’ve had my own business (a hair salon in town) for the last 12 years.<\/p>\n

“So yes, you could say I\u2019ve got lots of experience. It\u2019s a great industry to be a part of. I attend workshops, I love to learn about new trends and new ways of doing things.<\/p>\n

“And I love to be creative.\u00a0 I was always very artistic at school, and hairdressing offers great opportunities to be creative with people\u2019s hair while also having that one-on-one interaction.”<\/p>\n

Appointments at the TAFE College are available this month on Wednesdays (October 11, 18 and 25). <\/strong><\/p>\n
