Erkens)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>September 6, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The multi-million dollar Mountain Bike Trails project at Russell Park, developed by the Western Downs Regional Council, was officially opened with a small ceremony at Fishers Lookout on the Bunya Mountains on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The trail network\u00a0can be accessed from the lookout, as well as the Russell Park Picnic Area and Rifle Bird Park.<\/p>\n<p>It has been open for use since July but Saturday was the &#8220;official&#8221; opening with WDRC Mayor Paul McVeigh, Member for Callide Bryson Head and councillors in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Jane Erkens represented the South Burnett Regional Council at the event.<\/p>\n<p>The opening began with a smoking ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0 trails feature about 18km of riding tracks \u2013 ranging from easy to intermediate riding ability \u2013 with three loops ranging in length from 1.3km to 6.3km, and a shared use linkage trail for walkers and riders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guests at the opening had the opportunity to inspect the &#8220;bike washes&#8221; which have been installed in a bid\u00a0to address concerns about the spread of a plant pathogen, Phytophthora, which has been causing dieback in Bunya and Hoop pines in the nearby Bunya Mountains National Park.<\/p>\n<p>The project was co-funded by Western Downs Regional Council
