A group of keen volunteers marked National Tree Day on Sunday with a “weeding bee” at Kingaroy’s Carroll Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n

The group, made up of local residents and members of Native Plants Queensland, removed wheelbarrows worth of weeds from the area.<\/p>\n

Carroll Nature Reserve, in Coral Street, is one of the last remaining pieces of remnant vegetation left in the Kingaroy area.<\/p>\n

The block of vine thicket was donated to the former Kingaroy Shire Council by the Carroll family many years ago.<\/p>\n

The volunteers on Sunday also planted eight small saplings, propagated by local native plant enthusiast Graham Helmhold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

These consisted of Thorny Yellow-Wood (Zanthoxylum brachyacanthum<\/em>), DeepYellow-Wood (Rhodosphaera\u00a0rhodanthema<\/em>), Yellow Wood (Flindersia xanthoxyla<\/em>) , Native Olive (Noteleae Microcarpa<\/em>) and Diamond Leaf Pittosporum (Auranticarpa rhombifolia<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The locations for the new trees, which are also native to the area, were carefully selected and will be monitored and nurtured by the volunteers over coming months.<\/p>\n

The group has enjoyed some successes in the area, including establishing several examples of the critically endangered Phebalium distans<\/em>.<\/p>\n
