The Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA) has lodged a stay application in the Land Court against New Acland Coal, proponents of the Stage 3 coal mine expansion.<\/p>\n

The application is a bid to stop work while their latest appeal against the project, lodged in May, is heard.<\/p>\n

OCAA is appealing against a State Government decision to grant a water licence to the project.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said that despite a formal request that New Acland Coal not do anything that may threaten groundwater in the interim, it was “blasting and clearing the site”.<\/p>\n

OCAA alleges that mining activities have the potential to cause irreparable damage to groundwater aquifers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Acland is refusing to pause operations while we have our rightful day in court,” OCAA secretary Paul King said.<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s why we\u2019re taking this additional step to prevent New Acland from mining coal.”<\/p>\n

UPDATE August 21: On August 14, OCAA withdrew its stay application after New Acland confirmed that mining of the Manning Vale West Pit is not expected before September 1 next year. This means New Acland can now begin mining the Manning Vale East Pit.\u00a0 The Land Court is yet to set dates for the hearing of appeals against the State Government’s grant of the water licence.<\/strong><\/p>\n
