A group of “pirates” who began a 1600km car rally in Nanango recently have raised more than $12,000 for Childhood Cancer Support.

The Buc-car-neers left Nanango on July 2 and then “sailed” through Miles, St George, Stanthorpe, Chinchilla, Gayndah and on to Maroochydore on their fundraising voyage.

The car enthusiasts were also promoting “Talk Like A Pirate Day” (September 19) which is a major fundraising day for Childhood Cancer Support.

The charity provides families with free short-term and long-term accommodation, as well as transport services to and from hospital, and psychological and emotional support.

It has helped families from many of the regional communities the rally visited.

Childhood Cancer Support spokesperson Helen Crew said she was always amazed by the creativity and commitment of Talk Like a Pirate Day participants.

“Each year, we see hundreds of people take part in Talk Like a Pirate Day and create such imaginative and unique events,” she said.

“We are very honoured to have all the Buc-car-neers getting involved this year and help us raise vital funds for our regional families.”
