While Nanango township was celebrating its 175th birthday on Saturday, Nanango Golf Club was also marking a very special occasion.<\/p>\n

A week of events for the club’s 100th birthday culminated in a Reunion Day and the official opening of the “Centenary Green”.<\/p>\n

Across the week, the club hosted a Men’s Carnival, the District Masters (for men and women over 50), a Veterans’ Day, a Ladies 2-Person Ambrose and 9-Hole competitions.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, current and former members gathered to browse memorabilia, socialise, cut the Centenary cake and officially open the completely refurbished 9th green.<\/p>\n

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington and local councillor Jane Erkens cut the ribbon to open the new green, which has been rebuilt at a cost of $70,000.<\/p>\n

Club president Lester Calvert said probably another $10,000 worth of in-kind work had gone into the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other greens at the Nanango course had been gradually upgraded from 2006 to 2011, but the 9th had missed out.<\/p>\n

The Club decided to upgrade it to coincide with the Centenary.<\/p>\n

A bulldozer was brought in and the green was taken back to “ground zero” and rebuilt with the aid of a consultant.<\/p>\n

The Reunion Day also featured the launch of a history book by long-serving committee member and greenkeeper Neil Strack.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Neil trawled through all the club’s minute books from 1930 onwards to pull together a timeline of events.<\/p>\n

The book, which took more than 12 months to prepare, also includes stories written by the late Arthur Bright and Mick Muller for the club’s golden jubilee in 1973, as well as Neil’s memories from after that date.<\/p>\n

It is available for sale at the Golf Club for $5.<\/p>\n
