Thursday was a big day at the Coolabunia Saleyards … 1350 weaners went under the hammer, a zero-turn mower was given away, and the South Burnett Regional Council’s $145,000 investment in new pens was officially unveiled!<\/p>\n

The capital works project by Council, which owns the saleyards, replaced a set of old wooden yards with new steel yards and ramps.<\/p>\n

SBRC commercial services co-ordinator Michael Hunter said the old pens were built in 1982 and needed replacing.<\/p>\n

The six new pens are more secure, and will assist animal welfare as well as improve staff safety.<\/p>\n

The three-week project – which involved demolishing the old yards, levelling the ground and erecting the steel pens – was handled by a local company, Debbievale Contractors.<\/p>\n

Patrick and Jodie Gleeson, from Debbievale, were on hand to see their new pens in action.<\/p>\n

Michael said Council planned to upgrade another section of the saleyards next year.<\/p>\n

The Combined Agents Weaner Sale and Show featured prizes for the best pens of weaners as well as the drawing of the major vendors’ prize, a Kubota zero-turn mower from Ken Mills Machinery in Kingaroy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vendors who sold cattle in two recent sales were given one ticket in the draw for every head entered for sale.<\/p>\n

Ten names were drawn out after each sale, which then went into a final draw on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The lucky winner was Dave Freeman, from Kingaroy.<\/p>\n
