South Burnett Regional Council is seeking community feedback about the potential removal of a large hoop pine in Macalister Street, Murgon.<\/p>\n

Council has received concerns that falling branches from the tree pose a safety risk to the public and nearby buildings and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The hoop pine is on the footpath in front of the new Ancient Songbird Centre which is due to officially open on May 20.<\/p>\n

A number of powerlines also pass by the tree.<\/p>\n

A Council spokesperson said Council understood the importance of trees to the community and recognised that the hoop pine was an old tree which may have historical significance for the Murgon community.<\/p>\n

“Council\u2019s arborist has inspected the tree and determined that it is excellent health and there is no indication of pests or diseases,” the spokesperson said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Council would like to understand the views of local residents in relation to the tree.”<\/p>\n

A public meeting to discuss the fate of the tree will be held at 5:30pm on Tuesday, May 23,\u00a0 at 45 Macalister Street, Murgon.<\/p>\n

Council has also posted a short online survey<\/a><\/strong> that residents can complete.<\/p>\n
