A community meeting will be held in Kumbia next week to discuss the future use of the local tennis courts.<\/p>\n

The courts were re-opened with great fanfare in 2019 after more than $200,000 in grant funding was obtained to restore the complex after storms wrecked infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The refurbishment provided a major facelift: the courts were resurfaced and lined, fencing and lighting were repaired, and new nets, posts and umpire’s chairs installed.<\/p>\n

A hit-up board and hoops also allowed the courts to be used for basketball and netball practice.<\/p>\n

Sadly, photos posted on social media last month by South Burnett mayor Brett Otto shows the courts in disrepair again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Large cracks have opened around the edges and weeds and grass are poking through holes in the actual court surfaces.<\/p>\n

At the time, Mayor Otto suggested repurposing the courts for uses more suitable for the ageing Kumbia community, such as lawn bowls, croquet or mini-golf, but said more conversations would have to be held.<\/p>\n

Council has now called a community meeting which will be held from 5:30pm on Tuesday, May 2, at Rykes Service Station in Kumbia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Council encourages all residents to attend, to take part in the future planning of the tennis courts and provide feedback,” a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

The original Kumbia Tennis Courts were opened in the 1950s.<\/p>\n
