Some of the best golfers from clubs across the South Burnett assembled in “North” and “South” teams at Murgon last Saturday to compete for the inaugural Price-Smith Shield.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Golf Zone president Greg Nord said planning for the shield – designed to recognise two long-time supporters of South Burnett golf, Carl Price and Mark Smith –\u00a0had begun a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

Sadly, the well-known Murgon businessman Mark Smith became ill and died before the competition became a reality, but members of his family were present at Murgon Golf Club on Saturday to witness the competition.<\/p>\n

“Both men were long-term sponsors of South Burnett golf and we just wanted to show our appreciation,” Greg said.<\/p>\n

The Zone selected the 12 best players from the “North” clubs (ie. Murgon, Wondai, Goomeri and Kilkivan) and the “South” (ie. Kingaroy, Kumbia, Nanango and Blackbutt) who were available to play on the day.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 24 players all had low handicaps.<\/p>\n

The morning began with a 4BBB (4-ball, best ball) competition, followed by a single matchplay in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

At lunchtime, South was ahead four points to two.<\/p>\n

Their dominance continued in the single matches, with the overall score at the end of the day 11.5 points to 6.5.<\/p>\n

Kilkivan golfing stalwart – and former Kilkivan Shire Council CEO Ray Currie – compered the day.<\/p>\n

The aim is for the Price-Smith Shield to become an annual competition.<\/p>\n
