Energy Minister Mick de Brenni has admitted it is “unlikely” the corridor for Powerlink’s proposed new transmission links from the Borumba Dam pumped hydro project will be solely on State land.<\/p>\n

In a reply to petitions tabled in State Parliament, Minister de Brenni said the construction of transmission lines to the Woolooga, Tarong or Halys substations was necessary as part of the provision of “long duration storage” of renewable energy.<\/p>\n

“Powerlink is undertaking studies to assess project transmission lines, including evaluation of proximity to homes and infrastructure, agricultural land, cultural heritage, flora and fauna, topography and constructability,” Mr de Brenni said.<\/p>\n

“Community input is vital and guides all decision-making.<\/p>\n

“Powerlink is investigating use of State land wherever practical based on community feedback.<\/p>\n

“State land could play a key role, although an entirely 100 per cent State-owned corridor is unlikely.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“A Draft Corridor Selection Report will be released soon for public comment on a recommended corridor over a far smaller project area.<\/p>\n

“After further investigation and feedback, it will be refined to a 70-metre easement with final consultation and investigation to determine the route for State and Federal approval processes.<\/p>\n

“Any final design will incorporate scalloping and spanning to minimise vegetation clearing.”<\/p>\n

In a separate reply to a Question on Notice from Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington, Minister de Brenni said that to determine the best location for the transmission lines, Powerlink would consider various factors, including environmental approvals, maintenance access, technical considerations, social impact, land use, public safety and any relevant legislation, policies, and planning instruments that apply to the area.<\/p>\n

“These factors will be assessed in balance to identify the best location for each transmission line, including consideration of the use of State land,” Mr de Brenni said.<\/p>\n
