Cat registrations were unpopular with pet owners the last time they were mandatory in the South Burnett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

South Burnett councillors are suggesting the re-introduction of registration fees for cats, despite it being a costly failure the last time it was implemented locally.<\/p>\n

The suggestion was raised during Budget discussions on Wednesday about lowering dog registration fees, a subject which has been a hot topic in Council meetings this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Councillors fear the current dog registration fee structure is a disincentive for some owners to register their animals.<\/p>\n

Several councillors spoke in favour of cat registrations, saying straying cats were a problem often raised to them by constituents.<\/p>\n

However, Cr Kathy Duff – who was on Council at the time – said when the State Government removed compulsory cat registrations, the SBRC acted quickly to also dump them as they had caused so many issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Councillors speaking in favour of the idea on Wednesday said a fee on cats could help recover the costs of the Council’s animal control program, which includes a commercial-in-confidence amount paid to the RSPCA to run the Council pound.<\/p>\n

The decision about dog (and cat) registrations was deferred until more information could be gathered.<\/p>\n
