History was made at the annual “Reef & Beef Challenge” rugby league match on Saturday … the first time in the Wondai Wolves’ long and proud history that an A Grade women’s team has run out on to a field wearing its jersey.<\/p>\n

A pre-season challenge game against the Noosa Pirates was played at Wondai Sportsground last year, but that game featured the South Burnett Eagles.<\/p>\n

This year, the Pirates faced off against the Wolves and competed for the inaugural Margaret Holding Memorial Cup and a $500 cash prize.<\/p>\n

Margaret, who died late last year, was a Wolves stalwart but, fittingly, the Holding family also have connections with the Pirates.<\/p>\n

Both teams stood silently for a minute’s silence in tribute to Margaret ahead of the kick-off.<\/p>\n

The game was played in three 20-minute “thirds” due to the extremely hot weather.<\/p>\n

The Wolves were ahead at the end of each stanza: 12-4, 28-8 and 36-16 at full-time.<\/p>\n

Bianca Holt, who scored five tries for the Wolves, was named Player of The Match.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other Wondai tries were scored by Jacintha Geia and Traevonnah Fisher. Fisher kicked four conversions.<\/p>\n

Wolves’ captain \/ coach Brittany Holding – Margaret’s granddaughter – was presented with the Memorial Cup in a moving ceremony at the end of the game.<\/p>\n

The Wolves aim to field Under 14s, Under 16s, Under 18s and Open women’s teams in the 2023 Wide Bay competition, which will kick off in April.<\/p>\n

Across The Waves gave the Kingaroy Red Ants a solid pre-season workout at T.J. O’Neill Oval on Saturday evening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Kingaroy Red Ants hosted the Across The Waves club from Bundaberg in a pre-season challenge match on Saturday evening at T.J. O’Neill Oval.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The game was played in four 20-minute quarters, with the ATW Tigers fielding separate teams for each half.<\/p>\n

At full-time, the Red Ants claimed victory 22-6.<\/p>\n
