UPDATE February 22: SBRC has voted to extend the cut-off date until March 14.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Free green waste mulch will no longer be available to South Burnett residents at the Kingaroy and Nanango waste facilities.<\/p>\n

The decision to discontinue the service from February 28 was made at the South Burnett Regional Council’s Infrastructure, Environment and Compliance Standing Committee last Wednesday.<\/p>\n

It is expected to be ratified at the next general meeting of Council.<\/p>\n

Council officers recommended the move, saying the supply of the mulch posed a risk to the public and to Council.<\/p>\n

They said there was a risk asbestos could be in the mulch supplied to customers, as well as the biosecurity risk of spreading weed seeds.<\/p>\n

The mulch currently being supplied is dropped off at the facilities by residents and mulched by a contractor twice a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has been offered on Wednesdays from 10:00am to noon at Kingaroy; and on Mondays from 10:00am to noon at Nanango.<\/p>\n

Council was told the practice had occurred for many years but it posed a number of risks to Council as there was no quality control over what went into the finished product.<\/p>\n

It was also “anti-competitive” as the free service competed with commercial providers of green waste mulch in the South Burnett.<\/p>\n
