{"id":327650,"date":"2022-12-15T15:11:02","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T05:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=327650"},"modified":"2022-12-15T15:40:42","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T05:40:42","slug":"covid-19-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2022\/12\/15\/covid-19-strikes\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Strikes!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>December 15, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>southburnett.com.au would like to apologise to our readers for &#8220;going missing&#8221; for the past week.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, COVID-19 struck our office last Thursday (December 8).<\/p>\n<p>Anne and Dafyd are both slowly recovering now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, we are not the only ones in Queensland to be suffering from the disease at the moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The latest Queensland Health statistics, released last Friday, showed another 13,632 cases had been officially reported up until December 7.<\/p>\n<p>Another 15 deaths were reported, taking the Queensland toll since the pandemic began to 2361.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 320 people were being treated for COVID-19 in hospital, including eight in intensive care &#8211; the same level as the previous week.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_309815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309815\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/johngerrard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-309815\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/johngerrard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-309815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard (Photo: Qld Health)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard has renewed a push for people to get up-to-date with their vaccinations due to the ongoing and widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said the number of positive cases had risen last week and was expected to keep trending upward until the fourth wave peaked.<\/p>\n<p>Dr John Gerrard said a large number of people aged over 60 not up-to-date with their vaccinations were being infected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in this group are at significant risk of severe illness if they contract COVID-19, so it is vital they receive four doses of the vaccine,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gerrard said Queensland Health continued to track infections to inform its response to COVID-19 and assist in determining what impact future waves may have on the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 80 per cent of people reporting positive results in this wave are still first infections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs time goes on, it is natural that people who have not yet had COVID-19 will become infected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven this, I am hopeful future waves will be even milder as hybrid immunity to COVID-19 becomes more widespread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Gerrard said antiviral treatments were also an effective response to COVID-19, particularly for people over the age of 70.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cQueenslanders over the age of 70 should have a plan to obtain antiviral treatments if they do get infected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been an increase in the use of antiviral treatments during this fourth wave, and I am hopeful this will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gerrard said the rate of COVID-19 infections meant Queensland\u2019s COVID-19 traffic light system would remain on amber, which meant people were advised to wear a mask in healthcare settings, indoors if they could not socially distance, and on public transport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>southburnett.com.au would like to apologise to our readers for &#8220;going missing&#8221; for the past week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":311967,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1455,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>COVID-19 Strikes!
