South Burnett winemakers walked away with three trophies and 16 medals at this year’s Queensland Wine Awards.<\/p>\n

The awards were announced at a special dinner held in Brisbane last week.<\/p>\n

Clovely Estate won trophies for Champion Mainstream Variety and Champion Fortified or Sparkling, while Nuova Scuola took the trophy for Stewards Choice (South Burnett).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The annual awards, now in their 38th year, are run by the Queensland Wine Industry Association and judged by a panel of interstate and overseas winemakers.<\/p>\n

This year, judges were drawn from the Barossa, Hunter and Clare valleys, as well as Cairns and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

The awards are limited to wines produced in Queensland.<\/p>\n

But this year – for the first time – the event allowed winemakers to submit wines produced in Queensland from grapes grown outside the State, on the proviso these wines would only be eligible for medals, not trophies.<\/p>\n

Most of the State’s best wineries submitted wines for the competition.<\/p>\n

In all, judges evaluated 175 entries across 19 classes, with Clovely Estate, Moffatdale Ridge, Nuova Scuola and Kingsley Grove Estate all receiving awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to its two trophies, Clovely Estate won two gold medals, two silvers and three bronzes.<\/p>\n

Moffatdale Ridge secured two silver medals, and Nuova Scuola a gold, two silvers and a bronze, while Kingsley Grove Estate received three bronzes.<\/p>\n

Clovely Estate’s chief winemaker Nick Pesudovs said he was delighted with the awards, which showed the South Burnett region was ideal for Mediterranean grape varieties.<\/p>\n
