The State Government is considering expanding it popular Containers For Change program to include glass wine and spirit bottles.<\/p>\n

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government would gauge the community\u2019s views about expanding the scheme.<\/p>\n

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said before Containers for Change began in 2018, only 18 per cent of beverage containers were recovered and recycled.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, that number has grown threefold to 65 per cent,\u201d the Minister said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge achievement, but there\u2019s still more to do.”<\/p>\n

Currently, the containers for change program accepts most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking more containers eligible for refunds makes it easier for people to recycle, particularly in more regional and remote communities where they mightn\u2019t have a recycling bin,” Minister Scanlon said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that any decision to expand the scheme … is one that is backed by the community, so we\u2019ll be going out next month to Queenslanders to get their feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n

Consultation is expected to begin in December and run until February.<\/p>\n

In the South Burnett, Cherbourg Council handles the program, with depots in Cherbourg and Kingaroy; and pop-up sites in Nanango, Yarraman and Blackbutt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
