Overnight rain may have washed out Kumbia Race Club’s plans for its big once-a-year meeting but that didn’t stop South Burnett residents from celebrating Melbourne Cup Day in style!<\/p>\n

The race club announced the cancellation early on Tuesday after another downpour made the track too dangerous for racing but plenty of revellers – including a busload of visitors from Gayndah – still turned up at the course for a “phantom” meeting to enjoy a few drinks, show off their fashions (and fascinators) and watch the races on the big screen.<\/p>\n

But there were plenty of other choices, too, across the region for people eager to have some Cup Day fun!<\/p>\n

Kingaroy RSL Club hosted a big race day function in the Tobruk Room with trivia quizzes, a fashions of the field competition, all-you-can-eat grazing platters and sweeps.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were prizes for the Best Hat (Darryl Dove), Best Fascinator (Ann Mangan), Best Dressed Lady (Christine Haydon) and Best Dressed Gentleman (Les Henning).<\/p>\n

The afternoon was kept moving along in rollicking fashion by compere and quizmaster Natalee Edwards.<\/p>\n

In Murgon, St Joseph’s Catholic Parish hosted its traditional Melbourne Cup luncheon at the Royal Hotel with entertainment, raffles and sweeps.<\/p>\n

Many other pubs and clubs across the South Burnett also put on events, including the Radnor in Blackbutt, the Royal in Yarraman and the Commercial in Kingaroy.<\/p>\n
