community-driven events (Photo: SBRC)

October 31, 2022

South Burnett Regional Council gave almost $134,000 to community groups in 2021-22 according to its latest Annual Report.

The Council’s six-monthly Community Grants program distributed $86,529 to 42 community groups last financial year, and six projects received $13,797 in funding from the Regional Arts Development Fund.

The Council also donated $8000 to eight hall groups to help with their annual insurance costs; $5000 for five Australia Day or Anzac Day events around the region; and gave two $500 Elite Youth Performance Sponsorships to help two young athletes attend Athletics Australia’s National Championships.

On top of this, Council also provided in-kind support to 16 community groups to help them run events ranging from campdrafts to race meetings, and Christmas carnivals to fishing competitions.

This support ranged from providing skip bins to tables, chairs and gazebo tents.

While not costed, this support is likely to have saved event organisers between $30,000 to $50,000 if they had to source similar equipment from hire services.

In addition, the Mayor and Councillors contributed a further $19,665 from their own discretionary funds to assist other community groups whose projects did not fit into the Council’s six-monthly community grants program cycle.

The Annual Report lists where the Discretionary Funds
