The State Government is investigating the impact the short-term rental market is having on the State\u2019s housing supply.<\/p>\n

The follows by moves by some councils to try to limit the number of properties on rental sites such as AirBnB and Stayz.<\/p>\n

In March, Hobart Council passed a motion to limit the number of short-term rental properties to stop any new permits for whole-house short-stay development in residential areas.<\/p>\n

And in June, Brisbane City Council warned property owners\u00a0who listed their homes on short-stay website they faced a 50 per cent increase in rates.<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said on Tuesday the rental market in Queensland was very tight in many areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“People are seeing their rent increased or are struggling to find an available rental near their work or kids\u2019 school,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have a clear picture of the impact short-term rental properties are having on the rental market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we will commission a body of research to understand the impact properties placed on short-term rental sites such as AirBnB and Stayz has on the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis work will provide some detailed analysis into the positive and negative impacts of short-term rental accommodation on housing affordability and availability, the tourism industry, property owners and Queensland\u2019s cities and regional communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt will also identify if the impact is the same across Queensland or if the experience varies across different regions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many factors here, including Queensland being the nation\u2019s tourism capital and having suitable accommodation for international, interstate and intrastate visitors is vital for businesses and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Miles said it was hoped the results of the research would be delivered to the government by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
