Murgon RSL Sub-Branch plans to create a new memorial park in Gore Street to acknowledge the service of veterans from conflicts post-World War II.<\/p>\n

The space will include about 20 trees, purchased with the help of a $4542 Federal Government grant to recognise the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.<\/p>\n

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien congratulated the Sub-Branch on receiving the grant.<\/p>\n

“The Murgon RSL Sub-Branch purchased part of the old railway corridor some time ago and has always planned to create a memorial park at Gore Street,” Mr O’Brien said.<\/p>\n

“This will create a new place for the community to reflect on the service of the Queen and the military.”<\/p>\n

The park will be located on a block of land behind the Murgon RSL Drop-in Centre.<\/p>\n

Sub-Branch president Kevin Gill said the area would include a bronze plaque to acknowledge the Platinum Jubilee.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The Monarchy have a long history of military service stretching back hundreds of years,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Princess Elizabeth became the first female member of the Royal Family to join the armed forces when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945 before ascending to the throne.<\/p>\n

“While there is a Queen Elizabeth Park in Lamb Street, we believe that it is important to acknowledge not only the Queen’s Jubilee but to also acknowledge her past military history.<\/p>\n

“The RSL Sub-Branch feels that it will be a fitting addition to acknowledge the Queen’s Jubilee, along with her war service in a memorial garden which also recognises those men and women who fought for our country during her time in the service of the Commonwealth.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
